Sump Pump Discharge Pipe & Discharge Line Guide

A sump pump can be mechanically healthy and still fail the basement if the discharge system cannot move water away correctly.

The discharge line has to carry pumped groundwater out of the basin, through the required lift and fittings, past the check valve, and to an approved destination without sending the same water back toward the foundation.

This guide covers pipe sizing, check valves, backflow, freezing, discharge head, water hammer, exterior routing, and the symptoms that point to a discharge problem rather than a failed pump.

If the system already has a discharge problem, use Sump Pump Discharge Line Service.

What Is a Sump Pump Discharge Line?

The discharge line is the piping that carries water from the sump pump to the system’s approved outlet or downstream drainage connection.

A residential system can include:

Every part affects system resistance. Longer runs, smaller pipe, extra fittings, restrictions, and greater vertical lift can reduce the flow the pump delivers.

Chicago Discharge-Pipe Requirements

For Chicago’s current subsoil/storm pumping provisions, discharge piping must include a full-flow check valve. The code also states that discharge pipe and fittings must be the same size as or larger than the pump discharge tapping.

That is more useful than a generic statement that every residential sump pump should use one fixed pipe size.

Chicago Plumbing Code 18-29-1111.3.4: pumping-system piping →

Chicago also requires subsoil drains to discharge to a trapped sump or an approved location above ground. The final discharge design therefore depends on the specific system and approved routing rather than a one-size-fits-all outlet rule.

What Size Should a Sump Pump Discharge Pipe Be?

Use the pump manufacturer’s required discharge size and the applicable plumbing requirements for the installation.

For the Chicago subsoil/storm pumping section, the pipe and fittings cannot be smaller than the pump discharge tapping.

Many residential sump pumps do use 1½-inch discharge connections, and Liberty currently sells check valves that thread directly into a 1½-inch sump-pump discharge. That does not make 1½ inch a universal requirement for every pump.

Reducing pipe size below what the pump and code allow increases friction and can reduce delivered flow.

Why the Check Valve Matters

The sump-pump check valve limits discharge water from falling back into the basin after the pump stops.

Chicago’s current subsoil/storm pumping provision specifically requires a full-flow check valve in the discharge piping.

Zoeller’s current support guidance also notes that a discharge-line check valve helps reduce short-cycling.

Signs of a check-valve problem can include:

Why Does Water Fall Back Into the Sump Pit?

If a significant amount of water falls back immediately after the pump stops, the discharge system deserves attention.

Backflow makes the pump handle water it already moved and can increase cycling and wear.

What Is Water Hammer?

A thump or bang when the pump stops can be water hammer.

Zoeller describes this as the check valve closing when flow reverses in the discharge pipe after shutdown. The noise can be annoying without necessarily meaning the pump itself has failed.

Valve type, pipe support, flow velocity, and the amount of water in the vertical discharge can affect how noticeable the event is.

Can a Sump Pump Discharge Line Freeze?

Yes. Exterior piping can freeze when water remains trapped in a cold section of the discharge route.

A frozen line can leave the pump running with nowhere for the water to go.

Freeze risk depends on the entire exterior route: exposed length, slope, trapped water, termination, and any extension attached to the outlet.

Do not repeatedly force a pump to operate against a discharge route that appears blocked.

Pipe Length, Elbows, and Total Dynamic Head

Every discharge system creates resistance.

Total dynamic head includes vertical lift plus friction losses through the piping and fittings. As head increases, the pump normally delivers less water.

This is why changing the discharge route can change pump performance even when the pump itself stays the same.

Where Should Sump Pump Water Go in Chicago?

There is no single outlet instruction that should be copied onto every Chicago property.

Chicago’s current subsoil-drain provision allows subsoil drains to discharge to a trapped sump or an approved location above ground. The actual pumping/discharge arrangement depends on the building drainage design, property conditions, and applicable approval requirements.

The outlet should not create a new water problem such as:

Do not rely on a generic “X feet from the house” rule. The correct route depends on the property and current local requirements.

Can a Sump Pump Discharge Into a Sewer?

Do not assume the answer is universally yes or universally no.

Chicago has different code provisions for subsoil drains, building subdrains, storm systems, and sewage/ejector systems. A drainage connection that is correct for one system can be wrong for another.

For example, current Chicago code says subsoil drains may discharge to a trapped sump or approved above-ground location, while building subdrains below public-sewer level are automatically lifted and discharged into the drainage system as required for building sumps.

If the existing sump discharge disappears into interior plumbing and its destination is unclear, verify the actual system design and applicable code before altering it.

If water is coming backward through a floor drain, toilet, shower, or laundry fixture, that is a sewer-side symptom rather than a normal groundwater-sump discharge issue.

Subsoil / perimeter drainageCollect groundwater around or below the foundationToward the sump

If groundwater is appearing around the basement perimeter but not reaching the sump, the problem may be collection rather than discharge.

Why Did the Pump Start Cycling After Discharge Work?

If cycling changes immediately after discharge-line work, evaluate what changed in the hydraulic system.

A discharge modification can change the total head seen by the pump.

Pump Hums After the Discharge Was Changed

A pump that hums without moving water can be air-locked, obstructed, mechanically damaged, or unable to overcome the new discharge conditions.

Zoeller’s current support materials discuss a 3/16-inch vent hole for certain installations when a check valve is used. That is a model/installation-specific service detail, not a reason to drill every sump discharge pipe.

Do not drill, modify, or disassemble a sump system based on generic online instructions. Follow the exact pump manual or have the installation diagnosed.

How to Tell Whether the Pump or Discharge Is the Problem

ClueMore likely direction
Pump is silent while basin fillsPower, float, switch, or pump failure
Pump runs but basin does not fallDischarge restriction, pump obstruction, or inadequate capacity
Pump empties basin but water rushes backCheck-valve / discharge backflow
Problem appears only in freezing weatherExterior discharge may be frozen or blocked
Water pools near foundation after pumpingExterior discharge-routing problem
Performance drops after piping is reroutedAdditional head or restriction

Can Flexible Hose Be Used?

Use the discharge material and size permitted by the pump manufacturer and applicable plumbing requirements.

A flexible extension can add restriction when it is undersized, kinked, flattened, or routed poorly. Do not replace manufacturer-specified permanent piping with a smaller hose simply because it is easier to install.

For permanent Chicago work, the complete discharge route should be evaluated as plumbing/drainage infrastructure rather than just an exterior hose attachment.

Does a Discharge Line Need an Air-Lock Vent Hole?

Some pump installations require an anti-airlock vent hole in a specific location. Others are designed differently.

This is manufacturer-specific. Follow the exact installation manual for the pump model instead of applying one vent-hole rule to every sump system.

Sump Pump Discharge Line FAQ

What size should a sump pump discharge pipe be?

Use the size required by the pump manufacturer and applicable code. For Chicago’s current subsoil/storm pumping provisions, pipe and fittings must be the same size as or larger than the pump discharge tapping.

Does a sump pump discharge line need a check valve?

Chicago’s current subsoil/storm pumping provision requires a full-flow check valve. A check valve also limits pumped water from falling back into the basin after shutdown.

Why does water come back into my sump pit?

A missing, leaking, stuck-open, or incorrectly installed check valve is a common cause. Exterior water returning toward the foundation can also send the same water back to the sump system.

Why does my sump discharge pipe bang?

The sound can be water hammer caused by flow reversal when the check valve closes. It does not automatically mean the pump motor has failed.

Can a frozen discharge line stop the sump pump from working?

It can prevent the pump from moving water out of the basin even though the motor is operating. If the basin is rising and the discharge appears frozen or blocked, arrange service promptly.

How far from the house should the sump pump discharge?

There is no universal distance for every Chicago property. The final route should comply with the applicable system requirements and release water where it will not simply return toward the foundation or create another drainage problem.

Can a discharge-line problem make the pump run constantly?

Yes. A restriction can reduce delivered flow, while check-valve backflow or poorly routed exterior discharge can cause repeated pumping of the same water.

Need Discharge-Line Diagnosis?

If the pump runs but the basin does not fall normally, water returns after shutdown, the line freezes, piping leaks, or the exterior outlet sends water back toward the foundation, diagnose the discharge system as part of the complete sump system.
